Drinking sites can be hotspots, but only during periods of severe drought when most of the local water sources are dried up.

The best time of day to occupy a stand near a water source is early morning, after the deer have concluded their daybreak feeding; conversely, in the evening, deer do not customarily show up at drinking sites until after full dark.

PICK OF THE LITTER

I’ve just described eighteen locations which, given the right time of year and/or certain weather conditions, are sure-fire places for taking a buck. Obviously, few of us have the time to place a stand in every one of the eighteen locations yet, at the other extreme, it would be unwise to put all your hope in only one stand.

A flexible hunter should probably have three to five different stand sites. This will allow him to adapt to changing conditions and also to rest each of his stands now and then, rather than burning out a single stand through continual use.

Of the eighteen stand locations described, it is imperative to have a stormy weather stand. Otherwise, whenever severe weather strikes, you might as well stay home because none of the other locations are likely to produce.

My second choice would be a trail hub, simply because part of the fun and excitement of deer hunting is seeing animals. By the same token, in being able to look over a number of different bucks, you stand a better chance of attaching your tag to something that is really exceptional.

A stand in a diversion area is essential if you live in a region where hunting pressure is light; if hunting pressure is intense, substitute an escape trail stand instead.

A stand overlooking a feeding area is a must. Make use of a portable stand for this type of work so you can easily relocate your stand from a grazing area to either a browsing area or ice cream food area as the season progresses.

Finally, my fifth stand choice would be near a mature buck bedding area, especially if the presence of a rub line, scrapes, or large tracks suggest that the deer in question is a trophy animal.
